What
is Taijiquan ?
Tai
Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) means Grand Ultimate Boxing. It
is a fighting style that uses the philosophy of the grand ultimate,
or Tai Chi (the Yin Yang symbol). It is based on duality. This ancient
Taoist martial art in the beginning stages uses slow, flowing movements
to develop relaxation, leg strength, and inner power (chi).
Tai
Chi Chuan is an introspective art that makes you spiritually and
physically aware, improving your physical and mental balance. This
form eventually develops into a superior fighting art that loses
preconception and exists in the now. One reacts fluidly with speed
and agility, being able to adapt to any situation. |

Benefits
Because of the
philosophy of the art and the way its taught (learning small
pieces at a time, and existing in the now) it teaches you patience
and improves your physical and mental health, and teaches you not
to obsess about the past or the future and to live in the moment.
Tai Chi Chuan develops a sense of well-being and calmness. While
you become adept at self-defense, Tai Chi Chuan practice fosters
a philosophy that permeates every aspect of your life.
In addition
to improving balance, Tai Chi Chuan strengthens tendons, ligaments,
and joints, and has been recommended as a great form of physical
therapy for people who have had problems with arthritis or injuries.
It is also an excellent way to prevent future joint problems or
injuries. |

Mark
Bram studied Yeung (Yang) Style Tai Chi Chuan with the
late Sifu Lee Wah Yook (former President of the New England branch
of the Eastern United States Kung Fu Federation), for 12 years one
on one, in the back of his Chinese Restaurant. Mark was Sifu Lees
senior student, and after his passing in 1991, inherited the Lee
Wah Yook Qi Quan system. This system uses Yeung Style Tai Chi Chuan
as a basis, and then adds various training forms of other Chinese
Gung Fu (Shaolin, Fu Hok Tai He Morn) and He Gung [Chi Kung (standing
meditation and internal power training)]. These training techniques
are done in an internal martial arts style, which combine to form
a system that more closely resembles the old style Taijiquan.
Students learn traditional Yeung (Yang) Family Tai Chi Chuan. After
many years, advanced students begin to learn Lee Wah Yook Qi Quan
training methods. Mark has trained in this system since 1979. |

Sifu Lee learned
Yeung (Yang) Style Tai Chi Chuan from Chu Gin Soon and Yeung Sau
Chung, and learned Fu Hok Tai He Morn from Kwong Tit Fu. He also
was trained from childhood in Sil Lum (Shaolin) Gung Fu. After Sifu
Lees death, and the family passed the system on to Mark, he
named the system after Sifu Lee. Lee Wah Yook Qi Quan means "Lee
Wah Yooks Chi Fist" or "Lee Wah Yooks Chi
Boxing". |
